2004 Audi R8 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) – Team ADT
The Audi R8 is a Sports Prototype race car introduced for Sportscar racing.
It was introduced in 1999 as a redevelopment of their Audi R8R (open top LMP) and Audi R8C (closed top LMGTP). The 2000 and later version Audi R8 was very successful, winning many races and championships until it was retired during the 2006 season. It is considered by some to be the most successful sports cars ever (alongside such greats as the Porsche 956/962) having won the prestigous 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005. A streak of six straight Le Mans victories was broken-up only by the Bentley Speed 8 in 2003, when the R8 finished 3rd.
The gasoline-powered Audi R8 race car has been replaced from 2006 onwards by the new Audi R10 Diesel, however, the need to further develop the R10 has meant that the R8 has seen action in a few races leading up to Le Mans.

Gradient Mesh Tutorial ( Part 3 – Plain Vector ) August 22, 2006
Sorry for an overlong tutorial, but this is the last part…finally !!
I’ll try to cover this last tutorial by using plain vector on most parts of the car.
1. ) Tire
First create brake disk at the center using the ellipse tool. You are required to draw 2 circle here – one for the outer layer and another one in front. Here I added some shade of radial gradient to the front layer !
Next use the ellipse tool again to create the hubcab. Try using the 1st & 2nd method in tutorial 2 on how to add color, and preferably use the radial gradient here.
What we should do next is to get rid of the solid fill color in all 5 cavities so that you can view part of the disk brake that is hidden at the back. To do this you need the pathfinder tool.
Next, open the pathfinder tool
>>click the divide button
Now, press shift key and click each cavity to select all 5.
What you should do next is press delete to reveal whatever is hidden behind the hubcab. In this case the disc brake that we did earlier plus the black solid background.
Use ellipse tool for all screw cavities and continue to add some finishing i.e : emblem, brembo brake caliper, rim, tire tread like I did below :
2.) Side Mirror
Its a matter of using the pen tool and trace the shape of the mirror. Here I only traced 3 main part of the mirror, use the gradient tool and transparencies for the colors and added a bit of highlight. The same technique are also used to vector the glass window, its reflection and wiper.

Gradient Mesh Tutorial ( Part 2 – Shading & Coloring ) August 21, 2006
Now that we’ve completed our mesh outline, we’ll now begin to add color to our Diablo.
For this 2nd part of our tutorial, I choose the front spoiler as our subject. Before we get started, lets examine it closely
1.) There are 2 methods how I sample my color.
a.) Firstly, I use the eye dropper and select at least 4 colors from the subject
Subsequently, I open my color picker and from the original point that I picked before, I moved the cursor and chose a color that’s bordering to dark or sombre. Still in the same color picker, I then picked something that is brighter but still retain a bit of the orange-ish color. Remember to save all these in your swatches pallette !
I’ll explain my 2nd method as we go along…so bear with me for now ^_^
2.) Lets start from the top of our spoiler.
What we are going to do is creating a dark shadow and a long crease line. To do this, we lay a few mesh lines like what I did in the image below. These mesh lines will act as a stopper – to restrict the color from spreading out.
3.) so go ahead and click to select the middle mesh point
5.) Continue and select all 4 points at the top of the mesh line
6.) With all 4 mesh points selected use the eye dropper tool to sample a suitable dark color from the ‘smudge’. Do remember where you position the eyedropper tool to sample – Pick a less darker color if you want to apply something that is lacking in brightness. A darker shading will required you to sample a color that is close to solid black.
Remember about the 2nd method mentioned earlier, well this is how I do it !
7.) …and below is the result of your hard work . See how a long line is formed just from sampling and clicking a few mesh points ! Notice also the reason for adding the mid mesh line as a stopper – to prevent the color from spreading onto other area.
8.) Okay now that you have some understanding on how to add color to your mesh work, continue to do the same process to the other part of the spoiler. To add a bit of highlight along the left and middle top of the mesh line you can try my 3rd method. Okay, first you need click one mesh point like what is shown in the image below.
10.) And as for the top middle mesh point, repeat the whole process in (8.) & (9.) by picking a slightly less brighter color this time.
Save the color in your swatches pallette, you’ll need it to do more highlighting on other part as well. You can apply the 2nd and 3rd method as well to simulate highlight on other parts of the spoiler.
11.) Middle of the spoiler requires color that are vivid and glossy. Open your color picker and change to a more saturated color. Yes it’s back again to the 1st method !
– Add a few more mesh lines where necessary and start to add color by clicking on the mesh point. Sometime by just moving your lines can make a big difference to your overall color outlook.
12.) To create fog light use your mesh tool to trace and add color to it using the 1st, 2nd and 3rd method to finish the spoiler of the Diablo.
13. ) Use the same technique to add color to the rest of the car. Here now is how it would look like :

GRADIENT MESH TUTORIAL : Lamborghini Diablo
PART 1 – Mesh Outline
Okay this is will be my second tutorial and it’s overlong !! And I decide to go a bit futher by tackling something big and ambitious : a Lamborghini Diablo. Hopefully this will give more understanding and a clear picture on how to accustom oneself in using the Adobe Illustrator’s gradient mesh tool.
Before we start I have to admit that this is not a 100% gradient mesh tool. There are a few part of the car that I simply used plain vector with pen tool and color blend to complete the whole car, and being a generous person that I am ^^ I will also show how this is done !
Our subject : 1999 Lamborghini Diablo Roadster
What you need :
a.) Adobe Illustrator ( I’m using CS2 )
b.) Image Viewing Software – to use side by side for reference
# I normally use Paint Shop Pro ( if I’m using my PC & Goldberg when I’m using my Mac )
c.) Plenty of patience !
What you need to remember :
a.) Always save your work. There’s no telling when your PC might go bonkers !
b.) CTRL-Y ( Command-Y for Mac )…for outline view mode, you’ll be using this keyboard shortcut most of the time to see your mesh outline and work in progress.
Click the above link and save this lovely 1600 x 1200 image into your hard drive.
Before we begin use the eyedropper tool to pick a color from Diablo as our base color. I use # E89A28 – not to bright & not to dark to my liking. And in this early stage I also pick a solid black and a solid white to add to my swatch.
Load your Diablo image in Illustrator, this in default will be in layer 1, double click to change it to….errr Diablo Image. Click the template box and lock this layer.
We are going to start by meshing the hood and the front wheel arch of the Diablo. This is a toughie compares to other part of the car – hmm what a best way to start, right ?
So zoom in close, click the rectangle tool (almost all mesh outlines start with a rectangle !) and place the rectangle somewhere in the middle of the hood. Use the selection tool to rotate and stretch the rectangle, then use the mesh tool and click the point in the middle – This will create a mesh outline !
Choose the lasso tool to rubberband and select all 3 mesh points on the right side of the rectangle and pull them down
Now use the direct selection tool to drag and move the top mesh point to the right corner ( where the crease line is )
Now take the bezier handle ( from the top mesh point ) and drag it upward tracing along the crease line, this require a bit of skill and accuracy, but it’s not that difficult !
Do the same to the middle and left mesh point by lifting it upward and getting the mesh lines all parallel. After this is done, remember to tidy up all your bezier handles by keeping them aligned and short.
Now do the same as before to the mesh points on the left side of the rectangle, dragging them near the edge of the front. Try to manipulate the bezier handle to get a nice curve like the example below, Also add a vertical mesh line at the top corner of the hood.
Add a couple more mesh points and again try to adjust the bezier handles into an accurate position that trace the original image underneath. Avoid adding way too many mesh point at this stage. We’ll do that when we start our shading and sampling color later on.
Now that you have outlined the hood of the car, lets move to the front spoiler. Create a new layer, the process are the same as before. We start with a simple rectangle, stretch and rotate, create mesh line and try to trace by manipulating the bezier handles.
Do the same for the side vent
. ….and also the same for the door
…. and also the the rear
add a few additional mesh points to get the correct wheel arch along the edge of the curve, same like what we’ve done earlier to the front.
… And simple mesh outline for the rear fender. Notice I did not add any additional mesh line.
…. and lastly the top rear. Ignore any vents or holes on the body, we’ll focus on that later. For now just make sure yourr mesh lines are traced and well aligned.
Okay, now go to your layer palette and turn off the visibility on the original image ( Diablo Image – the first layer that you created ) and you’ll get something like this.
Okay, so it does not look cool at this juncture, because it is just a basic shape of something that resembles a car with a plain uniform color with no tires and accessories. Well, don’t fret, c’mon and lets move to the second tutorial where we will be adding color and doing some shading to our Diablo !
